Job Description

The Physician provides professional medical direction, oversight, and direct patient care in a correctional facility.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical services including examinations, diagnoses, prescribing medication, and follow-up care.

  • Lead the medical program in collaboration with the Health Services Supervisor.

  • Monitor and review the standard of care delivered to inmates.

  • Conduct admissions evaluations and make clinical rounds.

  • Participate in treatment team meetings for individualized health planning.

  • Direct unit treatment operations and perform minor (and occasionally major) surgeries.

  • Hold clinics for nursing staff and issue diagnoses, prescriptions, and protocols.

  • Maintain good relationships with facility staff, nursing, and external providers.

  • Use sound independent judgment alongside corporate and facility policies.

  • Motivate and guide staff according to policy and procedures.

  • Evaluate and prevent duplication/inappropriate use of medical services.

  • Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and recommend early release when appropriate.

  • Manage catastrophic illnesses.

  • Maintain and audit medical records with high confidentiality.

  • Recommend improvements in health service efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  • Build strong relationships with outside hospitals/agencies.

  • Facilitate accreditation efforts (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO).

  • Be available for on-call status.

  • Attend relevant seminars, workshops, and conferences.

  • Provide individual/group health education and counseling.

  • Clearly define staff roles and ensure accountability.

  • Promote effective communication across shifts and among stakeholders.

  • Communicate effectively with staff, inmates, visitors, and external parties.

  • Interpret and enforce rules, regulations, and medical/legal documentation.

  • Handle court-related matters, including lawsuits and testimonies.

  • Prepare safety reports and manage serious incidents.

  • Conduct investigations and take disciplinary action when necessary.

  • Observe inmate behavior and maintain facility safety (searches, contraband checks, etc.).

  • Respond to emergencies and perform rescue functions as needed.

  • Maintain vigilance and composure in high-stress situations.

  • Domestic U.S. travel may be required.

  • Ability to handle difficult interpersonal situations professionally.

  • Math proficiency in practical medical applications.

  • Capacity to interpret complex instructions and perform under stress.

Compensation: $275,000.00 - $325,000.00 per year
