Position Overview:

Are you passionate about animal welfare and public safety? Join the Nashville-Davidson County Animal Care and Control team as an Animal Care and Control Officer 3. In this leadership role, you’ll serve as the lead field officer, overseeing and mentoring Animal Control Officers while protecting and rescuing animals in our community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Supervision

    • Lead, schedule, and mentor Animal Control Officers 1 and 2.

    • Initiate and manage projects to improve operational efficiency.

  • Field Operations

    • Patrol designated areas to respond to service calls and investigate animal-related incidents.

    • Apprehend stray, dangerous, or injured animals and transport them safely.

    • Investigate animal cruelty complaints and enforce local/state animal control laws.

  • Emergency & Humane Care

    • Administer first aid to injured animals; perform field euthanasia when necessary.

    • Ensure humane handling, treatment, and transportation of all animals.

  • Public Engagement & Education

    • Conduct public safety presentations and community outreach on animal care and control.

    • Serve as liaison with the public, law enforcement, and other stakeholders.

  • Documentation & Legal Support

    • Maintain accurate records of investigations, daily logs, and animal care reports.

    • Prepare legal documents and testify in court when required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET) — or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. (Note: State regulations prohibit CAET certification for individuals with any criminal convictions.)

  • Valid Class “D” Driver’s License and personal vehicle with valid insurance per Tennessee law.

  • Must complete pre-exposure rabies vaccinations.

  • Strong animal handling experience and knowledge of animal behavior.

  • Familiarity with local and state animal control laws and enforcement procedures.

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations, including administering first aid and humane euthanasia.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, public interaction, and conflict resolution.

Preferred Experience:

  • 5–7 years of experience in animal control, law enforcement, or related field.

  • Experience with animal rescue, cruelty investigations, and public safety programs.

  • Knowledge of animal welfare best practices and humane care standards.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Comfortable working around injured or aggressive animals and in emotionally intense situations.

  • Standing, walking, and bending for extended periods; working at animal shelters and in field environments.

Compensation: $50,000.00 - $52,471.00 per year
