Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Audit Director to lead and manage our nonprofit-focused audit practice. This individual will be responsible for overseeing a diverse portfolio of nonprofit clients, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of their financial statements, compliance with regulations, and adherence to best practices within the sector. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of nonprofit financials, industry-specific regulations, and the unique challenges facing nonprofit organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage audit engagements for a variety of nonprofit clients, including foundations, charities, associations, and other social impact organizations.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for clients, establishing strong, trusted relationships and delivering high-quality service.
  • Supervise and mentor audit staff and senior auditors, providing training, guidance, and performance reviews to support their development.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and reporting of audits in accordance with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), Government Auditing Standards (GAS), and other relevant frameworks such as Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200).
  • Review and approve audit workpapers, financial statements, and other deliverables, ensuring compliance with industry standards and applicable regulations.
  • Stay current with nonprofit industry developments, including changes in accounting standards (e.g., FASB, AICPA) and regulations (e.g., IRS Form 990, OMB Circular A-133).
  • Identify and assess clients' internal controls and accounting systems, and recommend improvements to ensure compliance and enhance efficiency.
  • Advise clients on financial reporting, governance practices, tax-exempt status, fund accounting, and other nonprofit-specific financial matters.
  • Manage and participate in business development efforts, including client proposals, networking, and contributing to the growth of the firm’s nonprofit audit practice.
  • Collaborate with firm leadership to establish strategic goals for the nonprofit audit practice and contribute to broader firm-wide initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) required. Additional certifications such as CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant) or CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) are a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 8-10 years of audit experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role within public accounting. Strong background in auditing nonprofit organizations.
  • Technical Knowledge: Expertise in nonprofit accounting principles (FASB), financial reporting, and compliance requirements (IRS Form 990, Uniform Guidance, etc.). Solid understanding of federal and state regulations affecting nonprofit entities.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop audit staff while fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial concepts to clients and stakeholders with varying levels of understanding.
  • Client Service: Strong client relationship management skills, with a track record of delivering exceptional service and understanding the unique needs of nonprofit organizations.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify opportunities for improvement and offer practical, actionable solutions.
  • Technology: Proficiency with audit software (e.g., CaseWare, ProSystem fx) and Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with nonprofit-specific accounting systems is a plus.
